Alternative Browsers

Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari lead the market, but there are other browsers out there for PC and Mac users which can be better then the one you’re using now.

When Microsoft, Mozilla or Apple comes out with a new version of Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari, it makes news, mainly because most of us use one or more of these three Web browsers. In fact, with the exception of Google’s Chrome (which made a big splash, mostly because it came from Google), most of the alternative browsers out there tend to get lost in the shuffle and it’s too bad, since some of these relatively unknown browsers are good, and could be better for some users than the ones they’re already using.

Check these browsers out; one of them may work for you.

Camino
It is an open-source browser based on Mozilla’s Gecko rendering engine, is clearly designed to be a simple, user-friendly, yet fully functional browser. With a look and feel very similar to Safari and Firefox, almost anyone will find it easy to work with in seconds.

Maxthon
It’s got just about every feature built into competing browsers, and many that you won’t find anywhere else, such as a “file sniffer” that makes it easy to download YouTube videos and a popup notepad for pasting or dragging text you want to save. Power users will love it. Those who like sleek design will turn away.

OmniWeb
OmniWeb’s best features include extensive ad-blocking, auto-saved Web browsing sessions and site specific preferences. From the unique tab drawer to support for browsing Web pages using OS X’s built-in Speech Recognition, OmniWeb’s hold of Mac specific technologies wrapped in a clean and uncluttered interface makes the product a delightful browser alternative.

Opera
Opera 9.6 for Macintosh is a fast, option-laden browser that represents a formidable entry in an extremely competitive product category. Its standout features are Speed Dial startup page, extensive search engine support built into the browser and it also offers support for widgets.

Shiira
Like Apple’s Safari and Google’s Chrome, Shiira is based on WebKit. One of the first unique interface elements was Shiira’s PageDock which provides the same functionality as tabbed browsing, but with complete thumbnails of every page that is opened. Other features includes the menu items for automatically e-mailing the URL or entire contents of a page with a single click, and a very effective full-screen-mode option that would be perfect for presentations or watching video.

Which is the finest?
It all depends on what you require from a browser!

Microsoft’s Windows Azure: Computing on Clouds

Identity platform with the new hosted services
Identity platform with the new hosted services

Microsoft has announced a new version of Windows that will run over the Internet from data centers hosted by Microsoft. Called Windows Azure, the idea is that developers will write software that runs within the “clouds” as opposed to the traditional approach of residing within servers owned and managed of a given business. The official word came at the start of Microsoft’s Professional Developer Conference 2008 this week. It is not known how Microsoft will charge for Azure at this point, but it will be free during the preview period. Azure would allow software developers to create new applications that can be operated on the Internet rather than on the developers’ computers.

Microsoft will use the Azure platform to run its own web applications and will also open the platform to outside developers for building and running their own apps. Azure will compete with other cloud platforms, such as Amazon Web Services, Google App Engine, and Salesforce.com’s force.com, and, given Microsoft’s enormous scale and influence in the software industry, its launch marks a milestone in the history of utility computing. The cloud is now firmly in the mainstream. Or, as Microsoft puts it: “The truth is evident: Cloud computing is here.”

The announcements come at the start of Microsoft’s Professional Developer Conference here. On Tuesday, Microsoft plans to go into more detail on Windows 7, the successor to Windows Vista, due out by about January 2010.

Interesting Search Tips for Google

Search Tips
Search Tips

These are some built in functions of Google which makes searching even easier.

Find Related Sites – If we find an interesting website and we would like to find some other alternative to this site then we can do so by using “related:” function. For example if we want to search an alternative for vikaskhera.wordpress.com you can do so by entering “related: vikaskhera.wordpress.com”

Find Links to a specific URL – This is quite helpful to find out the pages linking to a page in our site website. To find out these backlinks we can type “link:vikaskhera.wordpress.com” and we will get all the results of the websites that link back to ours.

Google Calculator – We can use google search as a calculator by typing an equation into the search field and it will give us the result. Try this equation in google “3*5 – 24*6 + 999” and see the result. We can use other functions like addition (+), subtraction (-), multiplication (*), division (/), to the power of (^), and square root of a number (sqrt).

Dictionary Definitions – We can get the definition of a word by typing “define:” followed by the word. Example: “define: html”. This will get you the definition of “html”.

Search for a specific title – Suppose we came across an interesting website but we forgot to bookmark the site and only remembered the title of it and wanted to find it again. Well we can search by title with Google to hopefully find that website a bit more easily. All we need to do is type “intitle: Vikas Khera”. By doing this we will only get results of websites with that line in the title.

Google Converter – Using this feature we can convert units like millimeter into inches, kilometers into miles, liters into ml, etc. we can do so by typing ‘5km in miles’ for converting km in to miles, ‘70litres in ml’ for converting litres into ml, and so on.

Compare Currencies – Google search engine has a built in currency converter so we can compare from one currency to another. Try this by simply typing something like “1 USD in AUD” in google search box and press enter and get the result.

Weather Updates – If we want to know what the weather will be like in our area we can type something like “Delhi weather” and it will give us the conditions in that area.

Search for specific file types – If we want to find a certain type of file on the Internet it is normally bit difficult to find what we are looking for but by using Google search we can find file types a bit more easily. We can search for file types by doing something like “Guide to build a good website filetype:ppt”. That will look for files with that name and the file type of a powerpoint presentation.

Search on a particular website – If we want to search a particular website from Google we can do this by typing “html site: vikaskhera.wordpress.com”. By typing in site: and then the website it will search that website for what we have type before “site:”

Get the local time anywhere – If we want to know the time in Australia now then we can do that by typing “what time is it Australia” in the google search box. We can also do it by typing “time (location)” without the quotes.

Remove unwanted search results – If we want to search for something in particular but want to remove some of the search results, we can do this by type -something after the search term to remove it from the search results. Example: Vikas Khera -gadgets. What that would do is remove the search results of Vikas Khera that included the gadgets so we would find other things like html, designer, etc.

Search for URLs – If we want to search for a particular URL, we can do so by putting a “_” (underscore), “.” (dot), “-” (hyphen) in between the words instead of a space. Example: What_are_we_talking_about. This would search for URLs that included those words.

Track Flight Status – We can track a particular flight status and we can do that if we know the airline and flight number. We just need to type in the airline and the flight number to get the status. Example: Jet airways flight 5. This will bring us the results of this flight from this particular airline.

Search Google Groups by the subject line – We can search Google groups by subject line with this little trick. Type “insubject:Vikas Khera” and we will get the Google groups with that subject line.

HTML 5: the next version of the HTML

World Wide Web Consortium released the first working draft for HTML 5 this year in January. It is a fifth major revision of the HTML we all use every day. When HTML 5 is expressed in XML, it is called XHTML 5. The current version of HTML is 4 which developed in 1999.

Apple, Opera, and the Mozilla Foundation – major browser vendors – came together as a group called Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group (WhatWG) to build up an updated and upgraded version of HTML. W3C took note of these developments and started its own next-generation HTML effort with many of the same members.

This new version HTML 5 also goes under the name Web Applications 1.0 and it would be immediately familiar to existing HTML programmers. There are no namespaces or schemas. Elements don’t have to be closed. Browsers are forgiving of errors. A p is still a p, and a table is still a table. At the same time, we would come across some new and confusing elements. Our div remain, but now HTML includes section, header, footer, and nav as well. em, code, and strong are still present, but so are meter, time, and m. img and embed continue to be used, but now there are video and audio too. However, closer inspection by the html programmer would reveal that these elements aren’t that different. This can also be an effort to make HTML more developer friendly; the datagrid controls seem similar to those of ASP.NET in name and possibly functionality too.

It was explicitly designed to degrade gracefully in browsers that don’t support it. It provides real benefits to programmers today while promising even more for future page visitors.

But remember that HTML 5 is still a draft and this draft may not be finalized for years, work on HTML 5 continues. Perhaps it will be in our browsers in December 2010.

Search Engine Optimization for web page rankings

SEO (Search engine optimization), is the process of making our website to appear higher in search engine results pages. Page rankings depends on a number of factors, search engines evaluate our website’s relevance and readability before passing on it a position or ranking on the search engine results page. The more relevance the search engines determine our website has for a given search, the higher the website will rank. SEO is the art of getting our website to work optimally with search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN etc.

It is important to use search engine optimization to push our ranking as high as possible when we think that most of the users of Internet will not look beyond the first page of search results. SEO services includes keyword selection, adding and revising content, creating search engine friendly web design, building links etc.

Search engines “spider” our complete website by following all the links on our site to new pages, much as a human would click on the links of our pages. This spider is also called as a Robot. For successful SEO, Our page should be most relevant to any given search query. We can do this by good unique keywords rich text content and getting “quality” links to the page.

We can help our website along in number of ways like making sure our page titles and Meta tags are unique, or by including Header (H1-H6) tags where relevant and by highlighting words on pages using of bold text. We can also include our keyword phrase – like image alt text and title text on images and links.
