Tata Nano, the so called “People’s car” is launching in Mumbai. Customers can expect to own a car for Rs. 1.20 Lakh to Rs. 1.30 Lakh. The company is targeting to book 10 Lakh cars in the first fortnight starting March 23, company sources said. All dealers of Tata Motors and select branches of State Bank of India (SBI) will accept bookings simultaneously across the country.
Allotment will be made through a draw and, going by projections even during this recession, those at the top of the draw would have the choice of becoming proud owners of the first Nano’s, or getting a premium in the black market.
A survey by Crisil suggested that Nano’s launch could expand the Indian car market by 65 per cent. The increase in the market is expected to push up car sales by 20 per cent over previous year.
Tata Nano has a roomy passenger compartment with generous leg space and head room. The car is 3.1 metres in length and 1.5 metres wide and is 1.6 metres in height. The Nano has a rear-wheel drive, all-aluminium, two-cylinder, 623 cc, 33 PS, multi point fuel injection petrol engine. This is the first time that a two-cylinder gasoline engine is being used in a car with single balancer shaft. Tata Nano will have tubeless tires.

Maruti Cervo is another compact car which is all set to overtake Alto. The little car could hit the road early 2009.
The Suzuki car will sport a Suzuki 660cc engine – as against Nano’s 623cc – and wear a tag of around Rs 1.5 lakh on road – a little higher than Nano, which is expected to be Rs 1.25 lakh on road. The car might be called “Suzuki Cervo”. The 1 liter engine capacity will thus yield 60-65 bhp power in the front.
Cervo is five door car, with an extremely sleek look, at an economical price. Predictions and speculations are all set to prove that Maruti Cervo will be the fastest and the most selling car once launched in India.
Air bags are available in the international version of the Cervo, but whilst in India air bags could be an optional accessory. In the foreign version one can get front semi bucket seats, 4 speed auto gearbox, a K6A DOHC engine with WT, Bluetooth capability.
Maruti Suzuki launched its new model, Maruti A-Star in India a few days ago. It is the most awaited model of the year and one of the last models that will be launched by maruti this year.
The car will be available at an introductory price ranging from Rs. 3.47 lakh to Rs. 4.12 lakh. The car comes with Suzuki’s 3-Cylinder, 1 Litre, 998cc K10B petrol engine which produces 67PS of power @ 6200RPM and 90NM of torque @ 3500RPM.
The car rides on 13-inch tubeless tyres 155/80 R13 and comes with gas-charged dampers, which reacts to bumps instantly, and hence are better. Front suspension is the universal Mc Pherson Struts and Coil Springs while rear is an Isolated Trailing Link Suspension with Coil Springs.
A-Star comes in three versions – Lxi, Vxi and the ZXi. The top-end ZXi variant comes with ABS + EBD (Air-Bags as standard and Electronic Brake Force and rear window de-fogger along with a dash integrated music system with 4-speaker and an AUX-IN to connect your iPods, which is also shared with the VXi variant.
The A-Star comes in a total of 9 colors: Azure Grey, Arctic White, Sunlight Copper, Midnight Black, Paradise Blue, Silky Silver, Healing Green, Bright Red and Desert Brown.
A-Star will be manufactured at their Manesar plant where the company has made an investment of Rs. 2500 crores for expansion and up-gradation of the plant. It will also be an extension to its existing Gurgaon plant.
The car will be built exclusively in India for the domestic market and will be exported to 150 countries across Europe, Middle East, Latin America, Asia, Australlia and Africa.
